After the non-football members of the Big East left for a new conference (except Notre Dame, which joined the ACC for all sports except football instead), the new basketball-focused conference attracted the moniker 'Big East 3.11 for Workgroups' as the third major version of the Big East (the first being the version after Miami and Virginia Tech joined the ACC). With all the shifitng membership and conference name changes that happened by the time there were certainly too many sub-versions for it to be the simple Big East 3.0.

Its membership includes 5 traditional Big East schools (Georgetown, Villanova, Providence, St. John's, Seton Hall), two that joined the Big East in the 16-team era (Marquette, DePaul), and three new members (Creighton, Xavier, Butler). The last remnants of the football conference can be found in the American Athletic Conference.
